Camden Approve Late Night Levy

2016

Last night the London Borough of Camden (by a vote of the full Council) approved the adoption of the Late Night Levy. The Levy will apply Borough wide to all premises operating after 12 midnight and with very limited exemptions. (30% reduction for those contributing to an existing BID).

There may be some consolation for operators in that the approval did not have an easy ride, many councillors expressing reservations as to the unintended consequences of the adoption of the Levy, particularly the impact on jobs and the potential commercial disadvantage business in Camden would now experience.   Other Councillors raised concerns as to the limited exemptions and had clearly reviewed the deputations made by operators during the consultation.  The opposition was such that on the initial recommendation for approval the Chair was asked to take the matter to a vote, which was carried in favour.  Cllr. Simpson, one of the main advocates for the Levy, confirmed that the operation of the Levy would be reviewed in one year and that there would be transparency on the use of the monies raised by the Levy.

The Levy will be introduced on the 28th April 2016 but confirmation as to the time available to lodge minor variations for the reduction of hours and thereby removal from the application is awaited.  As soon as we are aware, we will update you.

Law correct at the date of publication.
